Sabbath as Resistance

Choosing to rest in a culture that monetizes every hour.

It is hard to rest when the world tells us our time is literally money. We live in a culture that insists every hour should be optimized, monetized, or at least spent producing something useful. If we are not doing something productive, we often feel a quiet hum of guilt, as if we are wasting our lives.

But God has a different economy. When He commanded the Sabbath, He was offering a weekly rebellion against the idea that we are only valuable for what we produce. To stop working, to stop optimizing, and to simply exist is a profound act of spiritual resistance. It is a way of declaring that our worth is not tied to our output, and that our time belongs to God, not to the market.

When we observe the Sabbath, we step out of the relentless stream of commerce and consumption. We remember that we are humans, not resources. It is not always easy to untangle our identity from our productivity, and the transition into rest can feel jarring at first. But the pause is exactly what recalibrates our souls.

A small step for this weekend: Choose one hour on Friday evening or Saturday where you intentionally do something completely unproductive. Sit on the porch, read a book just for fun, or take a slow walk without tracking your steps. Give yourself permission to spend an hour without producing anything at all.

May your weekend be a gentle rebellion. May you find peace in knowing you are loved completely, long before you ever accomplish a thing.
